Regarding the Moon - Music Video | Andrew Hadro & Petros Klampanis
To purchase or stream Regarding the Moon on any platform use this link:
https://andrewhadro.com/linktree
'Regarding the Moon' is a new composition by Greek bassist Petros Klampanis, commissioned and performed by Andrew Hadro, baritone saxophonist in New York City. Hadro began working on the concept in the early days of the pandemic as a way to give work to composers during the global performance outage. It is written for double string quartet (four violin, two viola, two cello), bass, piano, drums and features the baritone saxophone. It utilizes the extreme upper register of the baritone saxophone, a range and timbre rarely used by composers.
The title is both a reference to the extreme upper reaches of saxophone range and a nod to composer Claude Debussy’s 'Clair de Lune'. The piece is so technically difficult that Hadro spent months re-learning the altissimo range of the baritone saxophone, while the recording took nearly 18 months to complete on two continents with sessions months apart.
According to Petros, 'Andrew asked me to write a tune that features the high register of the baritone, a sound which I find especially beautiful and surely not what someone expects to hear from a bari. I tried to integrate the roles of the different ensembles, within the whole group (strings on the one hand and a jazz quartet on the other) and create a musical story that allows the leading instrument to shine but not overshadow the colours of the group.'
This piece is the first in a series of compositions commissioned to feature the baritone saxophone with strings as part of Andrew Hadro's ongoing project, 'For Us, The Living'. Subsequent works will debut in 2022.
DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE EDITOR’S PICK - JANUARY 2022
’The piece serves as a loving ballad, and a bit of a nod to Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” delivered with stunning precision and grace. …So, is it jazz? New music? Who cares. It’s a work of extraordinary beauty.”

October Jazz Education: Frank Basile presents Six Important Baritone Players
Since moving to New York in 2001, Frank Basile has been one of today’s most in-demand baritone saxophonists, performing or recording with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Band, and the Jimmy Heath Big Band, among many others. At 3 p.m. EDT on Sunday, October 17, he will focus on the six baritone saxophonists who have had the greatest influence on his playing. The presentation will be live streamed as part of the Jazz Education series jointly sponsored by the Metuchen Arts Council-Jazz and the New Jersey Jazz Society.
The six saxophonists are: Harry Carney, an integral part of the unique sound of Duke Ellington’s band; Leo Parker, the first baritone saxophonist to incorporate the new sounds of bebop into his playing; Cecil Payne, another of the first exponents of bebop on the baritone saxophone; Pepper Adams, whose playing was characterized by an adventurous sense of harmony, an assertive tone, and a witty sense of humor; Ronnie Cuber who synthesized the influence of Adams along with that of great tenor players such as Hank Mobley and John Coltrane into a very personal and engaging style; and Gary Smulyan, who switched from alto saxophone to baritone when he joined Woody Herman’s band and who was the winner of JazzTimes’ 2020 Readers’ Poll as the Number 1 current baritone player. Gerry Mulligan, noticeably absent from this presentation, was the subject of July’s Jazz Education presentation, still available on the NJJS YouTube channel.
The presentation will be available on the njjs.org website as well as on the NJJS Facebook page and YouTube channel. Attendance is free, but donations are suggested. If you can’t watch it live, it will be archived on njjs.org and the NJJS YouTube channel.

Cathy Segal-Garcia's Noontime Hang, featuring baritone sax man Gary Smulyan!
My special guest today, 7/5/21(my 299th day’s guest!) is baritone sax man Gary Smulyan!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mulit-award winning Baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan was born April 4, 1956, in Bethpage, New York. Today he is critically acclaimed across-the-board and recognized as the major voice on the baritone saxophone. His playing is marked by an aggressive rhythmic sense, an intelligent and creative harmonic approach — and perhaps most importantly – a strong and incisive wit.
He attended SUNY-Potsdam and Hofstra University before he joined Woody Herman’s Young Thundering Herd in 1978. It was a remarkable collection of young musicians who ultimately would find themselves in the forefront of present-day jazz. Joining Smulyan in the band were saxophonist Joe Lovano, bassist Marc Johnson and drummer John Riley, who would eventually become a fixture in the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
In 1980, unlike many of his colleagues and peers Smulyan didn’t have to go very far to move into New York City proper where he became part of the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra then under the direction of Bob Brookmeyer. Smulyan also found work with other important large ensembles including the Mingus Big Band and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra.
At this point in his career he has at least 10 recordings out under his own name. Meanwhile he continues to play with wide variety of artists – each presenting him with an opportunity to fully express himself. In addition to his work on Monday nights with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Smulyan remains close with Lovano, working with him in his nine-piece Nonet; then there is the exhilarating and liberating Dave Holland Octet and the seminal bassist’s Big Band. Beyond that, Smulyan has also enjoyed stints in the cooperative Three Baritone Saxophone Band as well as working with powerhouse tenor saxophonist George Coleman in his octet and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band that, similar to the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, is comprised of some of the world’s best players.
“Gary Smulyan’s lineage comes more from musicians like Cecil Payne, Leo Parker, Pepper Adams, Serge Chaloff and Nick Brignola – the few baritonists that dared to master the tricky, chromatic music known as bebop,” wrote All About Jazz’s Francis Lo Kee in a review. “Indeed…Smulyan is fluent in the language.” He was heavily influenced by Adams who was known as “The Knife” for his hearty tone and the energy of his rhythmic playing style. Smulyan’s Homage, featuring Tommy Flanagan was recorded following Adams’ death, and every track on the recording, released in 1994, is written by Adams.
Similarly, Smulyan organized the Three Baritone Saxophone Band, which places him in the company of two of his seniors – Ronnie Cuber and the late Nick Brignola. The group released Plays Mulligan in 1998, the date serving as a tribute to the late Gerry Mulligan, one of the foremost baritone saxophonists in jazz history and a mentor for.
These days Smulyan the Long-Island native lives in Amherst, Mass., with his wife, pianist and conductor Joan Cornachio. He is a faculty member of Amherst College and serves as the artistic director at the Berkshire Hills Music Academy in South Hadley, Massachusetts, a two year post secondary music school for eighteen to thirty year olds with developmental disabilities.
The baritone saxophonist, is a four-time winner of the Down Beat Critic’s and Reader’s Poll’s and a multiple winner of numerous other official polls including the Jazz Journalists Award for Baritone Saxophonist of the Year. He is a six-time GRAMMY award winner for his work with B.B. King, Lovano, Holland and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
Joe Temperley - Temperley's Town - feat. Cecil Payne, Milt Hinton, Buck Clayton. old VHS t.v.prog.
I found this clip I recorded from T.V. a long time ago because I had a fascination with upright bass players and I knew there was an interview with the great Milt Hinton. It was a jazz series called "Jazz Apple" & this episode featured Joe Temperley talking about his life in jazz and the people & musicians he's met along the way that became friends.
Please forgive the fact that it's only 20mins of what was probably a 1hr show, the rest must have got wiped at some point but I looked around and can't find this footage online so I figure I'd post it for posterity, it's not great quality but I hope folks can get pleasure from some of these legends.
...and Joe, I hope you don't mind me posting it, it's all about the music!
Transylvanian Folk Songs - Lucian Ban | John Surman | Mat Maneri
The Dowry Song from "TRANSYLVANIAN FOLK SONGS - The Béla Bartók Field Recordings" album by Lucian Ban | John Surman | Mat Maneri.
Sunnyside Records, May 15, 2020
More info & buy: https://lucianban.bandcamp.com/album/transylvanian-folk-songs-the-bela-bart-k-field-recordings
"In 1904 Béla Bartók experienced an epiphany when he heard 18-year-old Lidi Dósa singing songs from her Transylvanian village. He was soon on the road and between 1908 and 1917 Bartók would go on to record & transcribe over 3,400 peasant folk songs, describing the completion of his research into Romanian folk music as “my life’s goal”.
A century later, these three outstanding improvisers – Mat Maneri, Lucian Ban and John Surman – draw fresh inspiration from the music that fired Bartók’s imagination, looking again at the carols, lamentations, love songs, dowry songs and more which the composer collected, in the period between 1909-1917. . . . The Béla Bartók Field Recordings represent still to this day the biggest collection of Romanian folk songs from Transylvania"
Pepper Adams Interview (September 1977)
After his gig at the beautiful seaside venue (Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society) south of San Francisco, Adams is interviewed by George Hughes of KJAZ Radio. (The interview was video taped by a television crew from San Francisco State University, apparently reusing old videotape, which was not fully erased). Two weeks prior, Adams left the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra after an eleven-year run. Adams discusses his upcoming schedule in the Bay Area, his future gigs overseas, his time with Thad/Mel, being a parent, and the New York jazz scene. This is likely the only existing video footage of Pepper Adams speaking. More audio interviews of Pepper Adams can be found at https://www.pepperadams.com/Interviews/index.html
Note: I have reposted this with improved audio here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKnPKO4eYoA -
