3 new transcriptions from Anthony Pellegrini!

Transcription contributor, Anthony Pellegrini

Veteran transcription contributor, Anthony Pellegrini, has just delivered 3 more transcriptions. And they are fine choices. Gary Smulyan, Ronnie Cuber, and Harry Carney are all included here.

Ronnie’s solo is on “Hardbop Grandpop” from a amazing Horace Silver album of the same name. Gary Smulyan’s transcription is from a less known album by Michael Benedict called Bopitude and is over a Kenny Dorham song called “An Oscar for Oscar”. And finally the father of the jazz baritone saxophone is represented here with his solo on “Festival Junction” from the famous Duke Ellington album recorded Live at Newport.

Pepper and a Mulligan transcriptions added

I’d like to thank Jorge Retamoza for sharing two new transcriptions to the repository. Two very different solos but both from two great baritonists.

First is a Gerry Mulligan solo from what I always thought was one of Gerry Mulligan’s more interesting albums. Its called “Close Your Eyes and Listen” and its from a collaborative album Mulligan made in the 70’s with Argentinian Tango master, Astor Piazzolla. The music is beautiful and the arrangements are excellent. There is some tinge of unfortunate 70’s era percussion and sounds but overall I think the album is beautiful and Mulligan’s lyrical playing worked really well with Piazzolla’s tango.

The second solo is a Pepper Adams solo. Its the title track from his album, “Urban Dreams”. Not much to add here other than its great to have another classic Pepper solo in the mix. Urban Dreams is one of the later recordings he made as a leader.

Our first Paul Nedzela solo transcription

Thanks to Benjamin Trimboli we have our first solo transcription of a Paul Nedzela solo. Paul is the baritone saxophonist with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and recently released his debut album. The solo is on “Strange Bedfellows“, one of Paul’s tunes that uses the chord changes from the popular Benny Golson song, “Stablemates“. This transcription is from that album, so head on over to the transcriptions page and check it out!

Transcriptions are rolling in!

With everyone stuck at home the transcriptions are coming in regularly. This is great news for everyone else stuck at home looking for new solos to read down!

We have a new Leo Parker solo on TCTB, as well as new Gary Smulyan solo on “Jahbero” from his album Hidden Treasures – A contra-fact on the changes to “All The Things You Are”. And another Smulyan solo with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, on the tune “Dameron”, a contra-fact using the chord changes from “Giant Steps”. Thank you Leon Williams!

From Orlando Cialli we received the complete set of solos from Gerry Mulligan on his “What Is There To Say?” album. That’s a lot of work! Its a great album so check it out.

Lots of new Transcriptions!

We’ve had a number of transcription submissions in the last couple weeks!

Matthew Karnstedt has sent us a new Gerry Mulligan Transcription from a solo on ‘Take The A Train’ and another Pepper Adams solo on ‘Alone Together’. Fans of Pepper should note that we now have two different solos transcribed from him on Alone Together, comparing the two could be very interesting! Thank you Matthew!

The next set of transcriptions come to us from Evan Smith. In addition to a new Serge Chaloff transcription on ‘All The Things You Are’, I’m very glad to say that we now have not one, but three Pat Patrick solo transcriptions!

Pat Patrick was a great baritonist, best known for his amazing work with Sun Ra, but also an accomplished straight ahead player. Interestingly Pat Patrick is the father of Deval Patrick the former Govorner of Massachusets and presidential candidate. Deval donated Harry Carney’s last horn to the Berklee School of Music, presumably through his father – read more about that story here.

Other wise, head on over to the transcription repository and check these new solos out!

New Transcriptions!

3 new Pepper Adams transcriptions have been posted, “Down Tempo”, “Soulful Kiddy”, and “Sudwest Funk”. We also have our very first Scott Robinson solo, on the “Remembering” movement of Bob Brookmeyer’s Celebration suite – originally written for Gerry Mulligan. Head over to the Transcription page to check all of these out!

A big thank you to Ryan Middagh for sending these transcriptions over.
